Green Village
2008 marked the second year of the Green Village, which aims to foster and cultivate environmental interaction though our information zone. This is where organizations, vendors, and speakers are encouraged to share the spotlight on issues facing the environment and ways in which we can work together to maintain and sustain a healthy and livable planet.
As part of our focus this year, Home Green Home, we featuring information booths that focused on incorporating green-conscious living into ones lifestyle. Information on reducing your ecological footprint, saving money on renovations and energy consumption, government programs, alternative energy, city planning and much more were offered and took over a full city block of the festival street closure.
Sponsored for the second year by Bombardier — the makers of Toronto's new streetcars — the annual Green Village added to the existing roster of businesses, guest speakers and environmental organizations that participated in the 2008 festival. We are continually looking to increase the number and diversity of activities in the Green Village, and look forward to offerring this again as part of next year's festival.
The 2008 Junction Arts Festival was proudly 'Bullfrogpowered' with 100% green electricity. This means that Bullfrog Power injected carbon-free green power onto the Ontario electricity grid to match the amount of electricity used by the Junction Arts Festival. Choosing green, carbon-free power is an easy way for homes, businesses and organizations to help fight climate change and create a healthier environment for future generations. As centennial celebrations culminate during the Junction Arts Festival, join LEAF arborist Todd Irvine as he explores the neighbourhood to uncover both historic and newly planted native trees. From back streets to grand boulevards, the Junction is home to a diverse array of trees including the rare black oak often associated with High Park. Wander down a hidden alley to discover a honey-locust with a vigorous, arching canopy that is 60 feet across. Peek into backyards or turn your gaze skyward to admire the massive canopies of white, red and pin oaks as well as the delicate boughs of black walnuts. This tour will also feature the personal story of one resident who has turned her front yard into a “monarch feeding station†by packing it full of native trees, shrubs and prairie plants.
