Anti Aging & Laser Clinic : Aaron Yukich

2925 Dundas St. W.

Aaron Yukich

Aaron's passion for photography was founded during a seven and a half month long backpacking trip that took him across the globe and back in 2006. Of the ten countries he visited, the countries of Peru and Bolivia managed to find a special place in his heart. An anthropology graduate from University of Guelph, and more recently a student in the digital photography program at George Brown College, Aaron has been priviledged enough to return to these countries and find his way into some very remote indigenous communities located in the Amazon rainforest.

The Echo of Poets and Dreamers - Stories from Iran and Turkey

Come listen to the stories, magical, mystical and humourous drawn from the vast literary and folk traditions of Iran and Turkey. What will the teller draw from his bag of stories and who will be the listener who hears herself or himself echoed in the these tales of poets and dreamers? Let your mind wander like the steam coming from a fresh brewed cup of chai(tea) or kahveh(coffee) as a story takes you to a place at once enchanting and familiar...

Ariel Balevi, born in 1964, is a storyteller originally from Montréal. He has been performing in Toronto since 1999 as well as in festivals in Ottawa and Washington D.C. In Toronto, he has performed at various venues and at events organized by the Iranian diaspora community in Toronto. These include the popular Persian cultural festival of Tirgan, held at Toronto's Harbourfront in the summer of 2008, and at events organized by the Iranian Students Union at the University of Toronto (IAUT). His repertoire includes stories from the folklore and classical literatures of Iran and Turkey. These stories derive from such sources as the Shahnameh, the Haft Paykar, the Masnavi of Rumi and Thousand and One Nights. Ariel has an interest in cross-cultural influences in storytelling, which has led him to explore different kinds of narratives, from his current repertoire to the European fairy tale and monastic legends of Georgia.

smART scKOOL presents Solomon Hoasjoe's Urban Escapes show

Solomon has taken his lens in search of the gems of nature in our urban environment. He searches, not only in the obvious locations of our majestic parks, but the more obscure ones found between roads, in culverts and springing forth from cracks in our urban landscape as nature adapts and transforms in its survival to live amongst our concrete jungle. Solomon strives to see that which we miss as we walk past in our flurry of life. Come enjoy and escape at Agora or navigate to smartsckool.com!!

Fit2dance : Dance Workshops, Artists - Carrie Cardwell, Shahriar Izadi

406 Pacific Ave.

Carrie Cardwell : Acrylic has been my primary medium since I had children, but it happens to suit my process well: I often do my best work quickly. It lends itself to layers of washes for dreamscapes as well as to high intensity, sculptural like forms. Painting is a process difficult to swing into at a moment’s notice. For me, the preparation work begins days or even weeks ahead, usually around a planned chunk of time I guard zealously.

Shahriar Izadi : Shahriar has displayed his photographic work in the Distillery District and in Yorkville. The work is a 17 minute slideshow of Toronto photos.

Little Bird Fly : Caroline Whelan; Travelling Minstrels

2955 Dundas St. W.

Artist - Caroline Whelan

I was born in Canada and have lived in Toronto for all 19 years of my life. As a child, I gained a love for illustration after reading Robert Munsch books and seeing the lively and colourful illustrations by Michael Martchenko. During high school I attended Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts, where I was enrolled in a visual arts focus program for the duration of my years there. The program exposed me to different aspects of visual arts, such as graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, life drawing, illustration, fashion illustration, etc. Here my love for illustration was strengthened, seeing how I was surrounded by talented young artists. I'm currently attending the Ontario College of Art and Design, where I am majoring in illustration. I will be beginning my second year very shortly in September. This is a four year program and by the end I will have received a Bachelor of Design. After OCAD I hope to pursue a career in illustration, illustrating for children's books and other literature.

I experiment with different medias, I try not to limit myself to one specific kind. Through my illustrations, I hope to communicate a story. Images speak to all of us regardless of language- sometimes images speak louder than words.

Margret : Adam Vollick, Form of Flattery

2952 Dundas St. W.

Artist - Adam Vollick

Adam Vollick isn't afraid to take chances. He loves things that take hard work. He embraces the beautiful mistakes. He works with rock n roll legends and world class jazz drummers, and prime ministers wives. He makes pretty pictures for the sake of making them. Some people don't get it, he doesn't care. Have some patience, and shed your overstimulated stupid reality tv lifestyle, come and expand your conciousness. www.adamvollick.com

Artist - Form of Flattery

One day one thing you will never hear is ‘Who is Form Of Flattery?’ There will never be a book about him; he wants an unmarked grave; he’ll give his only possessions to his mother. He believes god is a woman: he sleeps just 3 hours a day and is obsessive compulsive.” Offensive, shocking, filthy, uniquely fun and exceptional are just a few ways people have described his work. Form Of Flattery meaning Secret Reward better know to this tight list of associates as Azar Awad has made the transition from brick walls, street cars and abandoned buildings to gallery walls and music. He’s moved from dreaming about lying and steeling his way through life to paying his rent legally. Azar’s raw, mainly black and white, large-scale and sexy street inspired work will be displayed in Tenderloin Gallery located in Margret Bar during his second solo exhibit in Canada.

Awad was born to a happy father and an angry mother in Windsor, Ontario, November 30 1982. He spent most of his life locked away from the world drawing, creating and expressing himself in any way he could. On June 12th 2001, Awad moved to Germany after reading Das doppelte Lottchen and found a new way of travel, expression and a source of motivation. Awad bombed (wheat pasted) his first wall in 2002, had his first solo show at Margret Bar: Tenderloin Gallery last year and has been creating at an all time high. He is obsessed with sex, human interaction, the Da Vinci Sleep alarm clock, Chuck Palahniuk, large-scale work, and War. He is also obsessed with one specific scenario he saw in the early days of grade nine, between the Catholic principle at a local school and his ex-girlfriend. www.iamformofflattery.blogspot.com

Artists' Statement

"NORTHERN DANCER - RETIRED TO STUD" - A Moment of Equine History.
A Series of six prints of the world's greatest equine progenitor.

"JUNCTION RETROSPECTIVE" - A Series of Images of the Junction. Photography has been an interest of Emmanuel since his early teens after receiving a 3-D camera as a gift. Opportunity knocked when he was living and working at National Stud Farm, now known as Windfields Farm in Oshawa, Ontario. The famous racehorse Northern Dancer had returned home, the place where he was bred and raised. "The Dancer" was retired to stud. Years later, travel nurtured his interest. Whenever the urge to capture a moment, his camera was never far away. Emmanuel's interest in nature, urban landscapes, equine action and people are reflected in his varied portfolio of prints and positive images using a Pentax Spotmatic 500 SLR camera. In 2008, Emmanuel's entry, "Junction Retrospective", shared first prize in the "Local Option Arts Competition". After many years of colour photography, the black and white series of facades and streetscapes of "The Junction" became a point of coming full circle. He continues to use his photography to promote the West Toronto Junction for its diverse architecture, a reflection of its history and people through the passage of time.

The Hair Lounge : Heather Sinnott

2940 Dundas St. W.

Artists' Statement

“ I believe in art bypassing the mind and speaking directly to the heart. I believe that art can touch deep into the very depth of your soul and speak a message without words. As an artist that uses the expression of colour to bring life to my work I want to invite my viewers into the experience of life in colour. Working in whichever medium strikes my mood, I find myself lost in the world and possibilities that a blank canvas creates in front of me. Using God as my inspiration in all things and expressing my soul, I often freely paint what without a predetermined thought. I love creativity in all forms. I love the process and the freedom it gives me. I love the fullness and intimacy I feel in fully surrendering myself and watch it unfold.” - Heather Sinnott

Heather is an artist that explores images, ideas and words that speak to her heart. She paints through her spiritual journey, expressing her heart, and speaks a language through abstract and representational images, shapes, colour and line. She feels her work a silent conversation between her heart, her canvas and God. Heather is a Brampton based artist, a graduate of Sheridan College and Bishop’s University where she graduated with distinction from the Bachelor of Arts, Honours Fine arts and was awarded the honour of highest academic achievement for her studio work in her graduating class. Heather is represented by Gallery Streetsville and a member of various arts societies and galleries in Mississauga, Brampton, and Toronto. Her work can be seen across the GTA, Hamilton, and in Sherbrooke, QC. wwwhsinnott.piczo.com

Triple Z : Rosemarie Beresford

2910 Dundas St. W.

The ‘theme’, if you like, of these watercolour paintings is an awareness of and a sleuthing of what lies beneath surface phenomena. Within landscapes urban and natural, are many sanctuaries: of forest, parkland and ponds. Each one of these is an invitation to discover the particular within: the fine or the coarse, the even or the ungainly, the expected or the unexpected; what is said of a grain of sand---that it holds within it a universe. As I walk through the city the multitude and infinite variety of visual stimulus invite a longer look, and a mental note to return. It is then that I immerse myself in the subject that fires the drive to capture what may be fleeting, or rock solid, stationary and impenetrable. It is the rhythms, and the energy I sense behind these encounters that for the while they and I become one. It is instinctual and physical, a gestural response to the visible that cements the experience that I trust myself to engage. My process is variable, but most often it is traditional uses of paint medium and supports. All these watercolours are made on acid-free cold-pressed papers.

Bookthug Nation Readings

Resting Readers: For you more traditionalists there will be three readings a day by various writers, on the back patio of the Troubadour bar.

Also Performing on the Back Patio ...

Blank Page - Poetry Based Performance

Gili Haimovich is an internationally published poet. She has published the poetry collection Living on a Blank Page (2007) and three volumes of Hebrew poetry. In North America her work appeared in numerous journals including the Literary Review of Canada and Cahoots and the anthology TOK1: Writing the New Toronto. Megan English is a dance artist. Her solo, ‘This Dance is Mic’ed’, was part of Dance Matters. (2008) Megan worked with ‘Zephyr in Zanussi’ in England. She dances in the video, ‘Backstage with the Modern Dancers.’ (Great Lake Swimmers) Her Nell Shipman inspired project was supported by the TAC. (2009)

This performance extends beyond the traditional format of a poetry reading. Voice, movement, improvisation and language are the tools applied to explore the different layers of the poetry. Songs and dances are shaped from the rhythm, images and symbolism contained in each poem. The dialogue between dancer and poet involves a broad rhythmic palette which combines both English and Hebrew. The play and spontaneity between the performers bring the poems to life in a real time and space. Blank Page engages the audience in an intermodal experience. The concept for this piece was initiated at the book launch for 'Living on a Blank Page' by Gili Haimovich. (Type on the Danforth, February 2008)

Urbanscape : Annie Si-Wing Tung; Various Artists

2959 Dundas St. W.

Urbanscape Gallery is organizing a group exhibition focused on exploring city themes: the experience of urban living, the people, the buildings, the spaces, the relationships, and whatever else defines your city. We showcase artists who explore urban phenomena and provide work that experiments with, expands upon and elucidates the theme: "my city".

Annie Si-Wing Tung

Annie is a recent graduated student with BFA Honours (Visual Arts) from York University. Her experimental art practice is based on the fascination with a variety of media, and experimentation of techniques. At the current moment, she paints images from her dreams, and collaborates with jazz musicians in improvised performances. These performances challenges the idea that a painter and a musician can influence each other with their own talents in front of a live audience.

This will be a live improvised performance which includes myself, a painter, and a number of different jazz musicians. The musicians (keyboardist, vocalist, percussionist, bassist) will be playing improvised music to the rhythm of my paint strokes, as I will be painting to the music. This will demonstrate how artists can influence each other while the audience can see and hear the process of a creative work from start to finish.
